Sub-themes

The conference will include three sub-themes, each with four parallel sessions. Additionally, the Forum will aim to mobilise innovative financing sources and empower cities to access green investment opportunities for expanding urban greenery.

Climate-proofing African Cities

Focuses on climate change mitigation and adaptation, highlighting urban forests as key to enhancing resilience. Contributions will showcase innovative strategies for integrating urban forests and green spaces to climate-proof cities. Sessions will demonstrate how these spaces mitigate extreme weather, reduce the urban heat island effect, improve air quality, and manage stormwater. Discussions will also cover resilient infrastructure management through adaptive urban planning, nature-based solutions, and policy frameworks prioritising green space preservation and expansion. Additionally, disaster risk reduction strategies will be addressed to ensure sustainable and resilient urban development across Africa.

Equitable Access, Health, and Well-being

Urban forests are vital for public health and well-being, offering green spaces that encourage physical activity, mental health, and social cohesion. This sub-theme highlights the need for equitable access to these benefits, especially for marginalised communities. Urban forests improve air quality and provide opportunities for recreation, stress reduction, and mental health enhancement, but these benefits are often unequally distributed. The forum will explore strategies to design and manage urban forests to maximise their benefits and address disparities, contributing to poverty alleviation, job creation, and improved living conditions. Collaborative efforts aim to create more equitable and healthier urban environments that empower all communities.

Making the Business Case for Urban Forests:

Sustainable financing and investment are essential for a thriving urban forestry sector. This sub-theme highlights the economic opportunities urban forests offer, promoting public-private collaboration to drive investment in green infrastructure. By showcasing the long-term financial returns of urban greening initiatives, it emphasises the significant economic impact of urban forests in African cities, particularly for local development. Discussions will focus on the role of urban forests in income generation, enhancing eco-tourism, stimulating local businesses, and creating job opportunities. Urban forests also elevate property values, attract real estate investments, and contribute to a vibrant economic landscape. Beyond direct financial gains, they play a crucial role in climate change mitigation, reducing energy costs, and enhancing public health, leading to cost savings and long-term economic stability.
